Like all materials for everyday use, upholstery fabrics also need regular care. Soilings should not get too intensive to avoid complicating the cleaning measures and to extend the durability of the fabric.
When textile surfaces are used fibres may be removed under certain circumstances. These fibres then entangle on the surface of the textile to form nodules (so-called “pills”). This surface change is called pilling.
In addition to light fastness, rubbing fastness also is an essential quality criterion for the evaluation of upholstery fabrics. The two terms rubbing fastness and light fastness belong to the topic color fastness.
Besides the abrasion resistance (topic in edition no. 4), the color fastness of an upholstery fabric also is a substantial quality criterion. Here a distinction is made between color fastness and light fastness.
